What to put in a housewarming gift basket

A good housewarming basket solves a problem the new owner has not thought about yet. On the first night in a new place, the boxes are everywhere, the kettle is missing, and nothing smells like home. That is the gap you are filling.

Five things, and you rarely need more: something that makes the house smell good, something soft, something consumable, something small and practical, and a handwritten note. A candle, a throw or tea towel, good coffee or chocolate, a set of coasters, and a card is a complete basket that looks considered rather than assembled in a hurry.

Build it in layers

1. The scent. A candle is the single most reliable housewarming gift, because a new home smells like paint, cardboard and other people. Choose something clean and woody, cedar, sage, fig or amber, rather than a strong food scent that will fight with cooking. If you do not know their taste, a travel tin is a smaller commitment than a large jar.

2. Something soft. A throw, a set of coasters, a basket for the things that have not found a home yet. Neutral colors are the safe route: oat, cream and sage sit with whatever furniture arrives.

3. Something consumable. Coffee, loose tea, chocolate, honey, a good olive oil. It is used up, so it never becomes clutter in a house that is already full of boxes.

4. Something small and practical. Nice dish towels, wooden spoons, a bottle opener, matches for the candle. Small, cheap, and genuinely needed on day one.

5. The note. Handwritten. It is the part they keep.

How much should you spend?

Between $25 and $75 for most housewarmings. A close friend or family member moving into a first home sits at the top of that range; a colleague or a neighbour at the bottom. Spending more does not make the gift better: three well-chosen things beat eight random ones.

What not to put in a housewarming basket

• Anything with a strong opinion. Bold artwork, ornaments and picture frames assume you know their taste and the room it is going in.
• Heavily perfumed candles, especially florals, if you have not seen their home.
• Kitchen appliances. They own a kettle, and a second one is a storage problem.
• Anything that needs assembly or a wall. They have enough to do.
• Live plants, unless you know they want one. A plant is a responsibility, not a gift.

Themes that work

The first night in. A candle, a throw, chocolate, a bottle of something. For people who will still be unpacking at midnight.

The slow morning. Good coffee or tea, two mugs, coasters, a tea towel. Aimed at the first weekend rather than the first night.

The practical one. Matches, dish towels, nice hand soap, a basket to keep the clutter in. Less romantic, more used.

The one for a first home. Lean towards keepsakes: something handmade they would not buy for themselves, and something with the date or the house name on it.
